Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall – F. Scott Fitzgerald
In any given transition, we move from Summer, through Fall, Winter, Spring to yet another Summer to come. Whenever a change occurs in life, we embark on a transition journey illustrated with the seasons. Think of these four Seasons as a metaphor for the phases of any transition life journey.
Like the Seasons, if we learn to adapt and see change as a naturally occurring event, then we can welcome change as a gift and an invitation to improve and enhance our lives. To grow through life’s inevitable ups and downs, we must move through each season in turn. It is now time to turn our attention to Fall.
Change can have serious effects on the mind and body, so it is important to be aware of the changes occurring to successfully navigate through them. Below, there are practical suggestions to help ensure a healthy transition as you discover what it takes to grow through life’s inevitable ups and downs:
While you are in Fall, focus your attention on:
- Acknowledge that changes are happening in your life. It is no question that any change can be difficult to navigate, but keeping an open mind about the situation is a healthy way to offset a negative mindset. If you are feeling down, ask yourself about the positive aspects of the change.
- Connect with family and friends. If you are feeling down, lonely, or anxious, reach out to a loved one or a friend. Connecting with someone you love can provide comfort and support.
- Reach out to a professional. Seeking therapy is a great way to connect and develop new strategies to help navigate changes. Learn more about our team
- Take up a hobby. Finding a new hobby or passion can provide support through life’s transitions. Whether it is walking, trying something new, or resuming an old hobby, it can serve as a healthy distraction and a healthy coping mechanism.
- Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness and meditation relax the mind and body. Make it a goal to find a quiet and peaceful place to sit, be mindful, and breathe.
At the same time, do what you can to avoid these detours:
- Denying the changes that are occurring in your life
- Jumping at the first option that shows up
- Being a lone ranger and trying to do it all alone
Practicing these suggestions or finding your own ways to navigate change can help you flow through all of life’s seasons with added peace and comfort. Life may bring storms, but we can choose to embrace dancing in the rain!
